How does an organization create breakthrough performance?

With alignment and focus.

Aligning executive teams, business units, human resources, information technology, and financial resources to an organization’s strategy is just half the battle. The way organizations communicate strategies is critical in forging alignment and executing strategy successfully.

Hear an industry-wide representation of C-suite executives from around the globe share their views and experiences on how they unlocked and realized value from their strategic initiatives and drove results to the bottom line.

Only joking. This bilge was vomited into my inbox this morning, an advert for some balanced scorecard event sponsored by the Economist and Harvard Business Review. Must be good with all these prestigious organisations, it still leaves me with a question…

What’s so special about running an organisation that it requires you to talk like a dick?

There is nothing special. Not to make you talk like a dick anyway. Not being in charge, how do I know? I work in one! You do too probably. This gives us an intimate privileged knowledge of how the baby-talk above percolates through an organisation persuading people that this is how grown-ups talk.

Realising and unlocking value? Driving it to the bottom line? I’m sure there are definitions to these words that people could recite but…

Don’t these people make bath taps, shoe-laces or bed mattresses?

Or perhaps they help people find a better credit card deal, or sell their house.

These are good honest trades that people use and need. A global economy has never unravelled because some shoe-lace conglomerate’s C-suite executives decided to change their aglet design.

Capture

Your laces might though

Call me an economic naif, but I think there’s a better way, a plan so cunning you could brush your teeth with it… make better things! Help people better! Become someone that people want!

I’ve re-written that appalling advert.

How does an organization create breakthrough performance?

By making things people want, and doing it better and better.

Aligning executive teams, business units, human resources, information technology, and financial resources to an organization’s strategy-that’s for losers.  The way organizations communicate strategies is irrelevant, what is critical is building your organisation around your customer and doing it well.

Hear an industry-wide representation of C-suite executives from around the globe share their views and experiences on how they unlocked and realized value from their strategic initiatives and drove results to the bottom line. Then ignore everything they say, what next? Magic beans? Leave the C-suite execs, whoever they are, leave them to unlock their bottom-line value. Learn to build a better mousetrap instead.
