By asking people about purpose, “what matters” and what is the problem we are really trying to solve.

A large hammer.
I asked for a volunteer, then asked everybody else to sit around the table with their hands resting on the table top palms down.
Then produced the large hammer suddenly from behind a cupboard and gave it to the volunteer with the instructions,
“Starting here [ pointing at back of unfortunate lady’s head] I want you to work your way around the table hitting their hands with the hammer as hard as you can until I tell you to stop”
To demonstrate the value of just stopping , even if you have nothing to replace it with, sometimes even nothing is better.
